Governor's Office addresses concerns for Recovery School District

BATON ROUGE-The Governor's Office has assisted the New Orleans Recovery School District (RSD) with the expediting of purchasing and services following a meeting with Department of Education officials today.

"We are clearly interested in doing all we can to support the Department of Education and the Recovery School District in educating the children of New Orleans," said Dr. Jimmy Clarke, Gov. Blanco's Chief of Staff.  "We will assist them by addressing procurement issues and providing facility support.  We have also verified that indeed every child currently on a waiting list will be enrolled when schools reopen on Monday."

The Office of State Purchasing and the Office of Contractual Review will issue delegations of authority to the Department of Education today to assist RSD with New Orleans schools.

All parties in today's meeting agreed that the expedited purchasing and contract process can be accomplished under the provisions of the current law and does not require an Executive Order by the Governor.  The Governor's office committed to remain in daily contact with the RSD to monitor progress on these matters.

In addition the Governor's Office has contacted the State Fire Marshall and the Office of Facility Planning to request additional support with the opening and renovation of schools in New Orleans.
